SYMPOSIUM  |  研讨会

Date:  Tuesday 3rd July 2018
Time:  9:00-12:30 and 14:00-18:00
Venue:  Room 110, School of Architecture and Urban Planning, HUST

This symposium discusses how social projects, spaces and realities shape three contexts critical to understanding urban design and planning in China: changes in government and governance; the history of collective spatial development in relationship to current community developments; and socio-spatial changes in urban and rural developments. The event will be an exchange of urban research on how a national collectivisation in the 1950s created rural people’s commune and urban danwei systems and how this important heritage of Chinese modernity laid the foundations to today’s urban problems and predominance of neighbourhood-scale communal developments. Their socio-spatial design, despite extensive policy reforms since 1978, continue to control access to public infrastructures and services, but also created resilient governance and new community-building models. The symposium further aims to discuss a new interdisciplinary approach to urban design in China that offers alternatives to Western-centric theory and practice and insights into global challenges of community-led developments.

Time:   9:00-12:00 and 14:00-18:00
Venue: Room 110,School of Architecture and Urban Planning, HUST

China’s communal development represents an important contemporary case of the interrelationships between governance, built environment and social transformation, and offers insights into new social relationships and social networks of care needed for intergenerational and sustainable future communities with equitable access to public infrastructures and services. These are important considerations to rethink interdisciplinary approaches to urban design and urban studies.
